Do I know myself? What a silly question? I mean of course I know myself.
Few topics have generated more questions that that of knowing yourself.
- Can you know yourself?
- Is your “self” fixed or evolving?
- Heck, does it even exist? And if not, why does it feel like it does?
- Can I change? And if and when I do, who’s changing?
- Are my thoughts a part of me, beyond me, or just external data that emerge from the endless neuronal activity in my brain?
- Does any of this even matter?
These questions. and so many more, are deeply practical and deeply spiritual. For millennia, religious, spiritual, philosophical, and scientific tribes have explored the terrain of the self. So much information exists that you could “lose yourself” in the search.
The ancient dictum, know thyself reverberates from past to present. It is as potent a statement today as it was when inscribed on the Ancient Greek temple of Apollo at Delphi.
When it comes to knowing ourselves, what is it that we are actually knowing and how
does it make a difference in everyday life?
This Aldea Explores Series, Know Thyself: The Journey of Self Discovery, examines the curious and complex dynamics that make up the self and why, in every moment of the day, our view of the self matters, a lot. From our moments of reactivity, to the pain of suffering, to the delight of joy and wonder, to our purpose or lack of it, knowing ourselves provides an important path to a wise and meaningful life.
