“We resist transition not because we can’t accept the change, but because we can’t accept letting go of that piece of ourselves that we have to give up when and because the situation has changed.”― The Way Of Transition: Embracing Life’s Most Difficult Moments
Is there a change you’re resisting?
What if Bridges is correct? What if change is hard not because of the change itself, but because of the “piece of ourselves” we have to give up in the midst of the change?
When you think about a change you’re resisting, what part of you is resisting? Where have you grown comfortable with a “way of behaving” that you may have to let go of? What would this mean for your future?
Transition is space between the current reality and future change. It can be a difficult space to inhabit. But the space of transition is also one of the most fertile spaces in the rhythm of change. Transition is the place where we find ourselves in-between, with few answers, and plenty of ambiguity. It’s a time of reflection, listening, and wondering (and wandering).
What might happen if we made friends this important element of change? In this segment of our series, we’re considering the rhythm of change. Take some time to locate a transition you’re navigating and ask this question: What would happen if I used this transition as a space for wisdom, acceptance, and preparation for what’s next? How might the answer to that question change you in the midst of the transition?
